How to Clean Your Hat for That Always-Fresh Look

Knowing how to clean a hat will keep your style fresh for years to come. Kangol hats and caps top off and complete any fit. But the urban jungle takes its toll on you and your hats.

Here’s a few tips on how to clean your cap and keep it looking as fresh as the day you bought it.

Know what you're working with

First, know the type of hat you are cleaning and what it’s made from. Look at the label to determine the materials it’s composed of and how you can wash it. “Dry Clean Only” means just that! Also consider the age of your cap.

Have the right tools

Before you get into the details of how to clean a hat and care for it, Kangol hats need a little extra attention when you attack those stubborn stains and odors. So, have a few specific items at your disposal:

  • A clean towel to stuff the hat with while cleaning.
  • A second clean cloth/towel to blot stains and remove dirt.
  • A soft, nylon bristle brush to buff out stains.
  • A steamer for removing odors and getting back your hat’s original shape.

Let's start cleaning

Now it’s time to get to work. The first step of how to clean a cap is to gently brush the dirt or stain with your nylon brush. If brushing doesn’t completely do the trick, blot or wipe with a damp cloth. If there are still remnants of dirt or staining, you can move on to the dry powder option. Be sure to follow the directions on the dry powder cleaner label.

We never recommend using liquid detergents, as these can be difficult to remove from the hat. You should never throw your hat in the washing machine, either. This can permanently affect the hat’s shape. Never dry your Kangol hat under heat — always air-dry.
